April 2009, Oakland, NJ--The national median salary of Internal Medicine Physicians increased 7.34% to $175,011 according to the 2009 Physician Salary Survey Report, published by Hospital and Healthcare Compensation Service.  These figures represent median total compensation rates and include base pay and bonus pay combined.  The rates do not include benefits data. The national planned percent increase for all physician salaries between 1/1/2009 and 12/31/2009 is 3.90%, an increase from last year’s figure of 3.59%. 

The median total compensation reported for Internal Medicine Physicians in governmental hospitals was $165,963 compared with $192,476 at nongovernmental hospitals.  The average total compensation reported for Internal Medicine Physicians was $192,845. 

Chief of Staff/Medical Director, 45 physician specialties, interns, and residents are covered in the Report.  Data are reported separately for Hospital-based, Group Practice, and HMO physicians.  Data are reported according to nine regions, control type, teaching or nonteaching status, and facility size.  The Report also includes information on 19 fringe benefits.
