New Behavioral Health Study Shows Psychiatric NP Rates Increase 5.65% in 2020
Oakland, NJ, June 2020 – The 4th annual Behavioral Health Salary & Benefits Report, published by Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Service (HCS), is now available. A comparison of the national 50th percentile in the 2019 and 2020 Reports showed the national hourly rate for Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (Psych NPs) in behavioral health facilities increased 5.65%. The national hourly rate in 2020 was $67.72 compared to $64.10 in 2019.
In a state comparison, Pennsylvania had the lowest Psych NP rate of $58.02; while Arizona had the highest hourly rate of $75.73. There was a 4.06% difference between for-profit and not-for-profit Psych NP rates. The national hourly rate for Psych NPs in for-profit facilities was $67.92; the national 50th percentile in not-for-profit facilities was $65.27. All statistics cited above represent the 50th percentile. The average bonus reported for Psych NPs was 3.16% of salary.

Comparison of national data (all participants)
Tuition assistance showed a significant increase in both the percent and the dollar amount paid by the facility. Tuition assistance was offered by 59.0% of participants. The average amount paid by the facility increased from 77.5% in 2019 to 90.0% in 2020. The average dollar amount paid for tuition assistance increased from $2,541 last year to $3,056 in 2020.
531 behavioral health facilities nationwide participated in the study and provided data on 22,915 employees. 28.25% of participants were not-for-profit facilities; 71.75% reporting were for-profit facilities. The results cover hourly and bonus data for 60+ jobs. Job data are grouped by region, state, CBSA, profit type, hospital + community health centers vs. non-hospital/non-chc data.
