COTAs Received 4.49% Hourly Increase in 2020

September 2020--The recently published HCS Rehabilitation Salary & Benefits Report shows Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTAs) in hospitals received a 4.49% hourly rate increase in 2020 compared to a 1.43% hourly rate increase for COTAs working in long-term care facilities. Data reflect rates effective May 2020.

Hourly rates reflect national 50th percentiles as of May 2020.

In a comparison of healthcare types by state, home health staff Occupational Therapist (OTs) received the highest pay at $44.57/hour; long-term care OTs received $41.42/hour; and hospital OT rates were $37.34. In a COTA rate comparison, home health COTAs received the highest pay at $33.00/hour; long-term care COTAs received $28.41/hour; and hospitals COTA rates were $27.45.

In hospitals, the lowest COTA hourly rate was reported in Pennsylvania, where the 50th percentile was $23.82; the highest was reported in Texas, at $29.97. In long-term care, the lowest COTA hourly rate was reported in South Dakota, where the 50th percentile was $24.50; the highest was reported in California, at $36.43. In home health agencies, the lowest COTA hourly rate was reported in Minnesota, where the 50th percentile was $26.10; the highest was reported in Florida, at $35.00.  

2,810 total facilities participated in the study, including 1,722 long-term care facilities, 262 hospitals, and 826 home health agencies.  The Report covers 19 therapy jobs, salaries, bonuses, hourly and per diem rates.
